Bloggers Talk Parent Arrest, Common Core, JFK

Top opinion pieces from Patch users this month.

Every day on Patch, locals share their opinions on a variety of subjects.

Here are some of the most interesting blogs from the past month:

  • Dinkelmeyer Dad Arrested After Inappropriate Comment to Teacher: It's amazing how the Board of Education and the Administrative Staff disseminate information to the public and the North Bellmore community when they feel there is NO eminent danger.
  • Historian Weighs in on Core Curriculum: As a historian, I'm keenly aware that my field of interest is like the proverbial canary in the mine. Historical ignorance is a symptom of a larger educational problem and, consequently, I'll weigh-in on the Core Curriculum all abuzz in Levittown and environs these days.
  • Fifty Years — A Time to Reflect: As I sit here and dictate this I am totally incredulous at the fact that 50 years have passed since the assassination of Pres. Kennedy. For people of my age group i.e. early baby boomers, Kennedy’s murder remains the most traumatic event of our lives played out on the national stage, 9/11 notwithstanding.
  • Massapequa Girls Volleyball — Long Island Champions: For 14 straight years Massapequa has won the Nassau County AA Girls Varsity Volleyball Championship.  This year, for the first time since 2007, they have captured the elusive Long Island Championship and will head to Glens Falls to represent the Long Island Region at the State Championships.
  • Macklemore and the Internal War: Last Wednesday, my girlfriend and I saw Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at the Madison Square Garden Theater. My mom bought us the tickets for my birthday, back in July. I find Macklemore to be one of today’s most inspiring artists so I had really been looking forward to the show.
  • McDonough Receives Donations for Coats for Kids Drive: Assemblyman Dave McDonough, R-Merrick,met with students from the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center. The student council organized a coat drive and donated the coats they received to McDonough’s annual Coats for Kids drive.
  • Toys for Tots Bike Run Roars Across Long Island: The managers at Miller’s Ale House Levittown, NY proudly sponsored their annual Toys for Tots Bike Run in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps and the Lost Nights and Tier Rats Law Enforcement Motorcycle Clubs.
  • Random Not Random: Last Saturday I received a “random” text message from my friend Fabian asking me to come into Manhattan on Monday for a mural painting at the New York City Rescue Mission. If you know me, then you know I don’t believe in random.
  • A Never Forgotten Thanksgiving: Everyone has a Thanksgiving they will never forget - this is mine. She was my Mother, my daughter, my friend - she was Carolina.  Within sixteen hours of my arrival, she gave me a speed course in bolivars, proper tipping and conduct in the City of Caracas.
  • Casting for the Eclipse: I managed to capture the partial solar eclipse on Sunday Morning. Since there were clouds on the horizon, I had to wait for a break in the clouds - which didn't last long.
