George Custance, recognized as one of the leading marketing and underwriting executives in the New York insurance community, has been named president of The Whitmore Group, Ltd., a prominent insurance services and estate planning company in the New York metropolitan area.
Mr. Custance has been with The Whitmore Group since July 2006. He served the firm as executive vice president and director of marketing until his recent appointment.
At The Whitmore Group, Mr. Custance directs all aspects of marketing, coverage analysis and account service for the company’s commercial lines division. He also provides management oversight for the firm’s claims department. In his new position, Mr. Custance will continue to oversee the operations of these units while managing additional sectors of the company’s portfolio.

Mr. Custance began his career with a national insurance company, rising to manager of that firm’s special risk underwriting department. His employment background also includes positions with nationally known brokerage firms such as Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., Frenkel & Company and Johnson and Higgins. At these firms, Mr. Custance developed the expertise required to meet the specialized insurance needs of complex industries that, in part, included pulp and paper, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Mr. Custance also developed insurance programs for several major commercial and residential real estate development companies and financial institutions, managing all facets of insurance program marketing, service and the risk management process.

With 30 years of expertise in all phases of property, casualty and international insurance programs, Mr. Custance’s background has enhanced The Whitmore Group’s recognition and ranking as a major boutique professional insurance agency in the New York metropolitan area.
Mr. Custance received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Queens College. He resides in Merrick, Long Island, with his family. His interests include boating and sports activities both as a participant and as a manager. He also volunteers as a board member for various youth sports organizations and he supports The Whitmore Group’s many philanthropic programs.
