11-year-old Eric is in the the 6th grade.
He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 3 ½ years old. Like all other children with Type I Diabetes, Eric must test his blood sugar 7–9 times each day, everyday, for the rest of his life.
So far in his young life he has already stuck a needle in his finger more than 18,000 times. He has also had to receive more than 1000 insulin shots. Eric is a great role model for other kids. He is in boy scouts, archery, and karate, plays the saxephone, and is doing great in school. Every year Eric's mom holds a bake sale to raise money for the JDRF walk.
This year, we are giving her a hand! South Shore Psychology, Body and Mind Massage Therapy, and Boy Scout Troop 225 will be helping out on September 23 when over 600 cupcakes will be baked, sold, and entered into a "Cupcake Wars" contest at Destiny Plaza.
Money will be raised for JDRF in support of Eric Lopez and all of the other 225,000 children in the U.S. with Juvenile Diabetes. The contest is a takeoff on the popular TV show. We will be joined by "Celebrity" judges Joe Kelly, of the comic book group Man of Action and co-creator of the popular Ben 10 cartoon, as well as Andrew Mincher, owner of Sugarrush Baker in Massapequa and 2nd place winner in real Cupcake Wars!
