Wrapping with a Purpose
The Merrick Kiwanis Foundation is wrapping presents at the Roosevelt Field Mall to help raise funds for charity projects.
Holiday shopping means crowded malls, bargain hunting, screaming kids, and armfuls of wrapping paper.
You can scratch one of those off the list - and we don't mean the kids; you're on your own there.
If you want to dispense of the wrapping paper, scotch tape and scissors, stop by Roosevelt Field Mall this holiday season, and let the Merrick Kiwanis Foundation take care of all your gift wrapping needs.
For the last decade, Kiwanis has been at the mall during the holiday season, donating their time, and a lot more.
"To see so many people come together and volunteer countless hours, to be able to give back to the community, is really great," says Kiwanis secretary Kim Scharoff.
Kiwanis donates proceeds raised from wrapping to various causes it's active in throughout the year. This includes handing out school supplies and toys to children in need, to sending the kids to camp during the summer.
Children aren't the only ones who benefit from the wrapping efforts.
"We're going to supply cots for the fire department," says volunteer Norbert Billig. "Often the firemen have to stay overnight for emergencies, so we want them to be comfortable so they can do their job."
According to volunteer Bernie Stein, the cost of the wrapping depends on the size of the box, but once folks learn where the money is going, size is quickly forgotten.
"[The shoppers] are very generous, many people give us more than we ask for, the spirit of the holidays becomes contagious," says Stein, who adds that Kiwanis will wrap any gifts folks may bring, including those purchased outside the mall.
Scharoff says Kiwanis volunteers also receive personal satisfaction from their work.
"We have a lot of fun wrapping," she says. "We have people that come back year after year, so you start to develop relationships with customers...it brings us closer together as a group."
One of those customers this year is Anthony Deturris of West Hempstead, who seems more than happy to cross 'wrap gifts' off his holiday to-do list.
"It cuts down a lot of work," he says. "You don't have time when people are in and out of the house, you don't want them to see the gifts."
The Merrick Kiwanis Foundation is wrapping gifts every day through Christmas Eve, during regular mall hours. They are located on the first floor of Roosevelt Field, in front of New York & Company. For more information, go to merrickkiwanis.com.
