Week in Review
A three-car crash, ATM fraud arrests, a profile of the Merrick Library director, Passover recipes, a Kennedy High baseball season preview...
In case you missed it, here's what went down in your town last week:
On Sunday, our big story was on a close call outside of the Treehouse Sports Cafe, where an alleged drunk driver smashed into the parked cars of two bartenders just as they were changing shifts.
On Monday, we reported on the arrest of three men on ATM fraud charges after they were observed making several withdrawals from a Merrick bank ATM. We also profiled the New Smith Street Deli, where owner Doug Gerber brings 30 years of experience to the business. Parents with students moving into Merrick Avenue Middle School next year heard from school officials about everything the school has to offer. The Kennedy High School PTA announced the four winners of the 2009/10 Reflections Program.
On Tuesday, we met Ellen Firer, who has been the director of the Merrick Library for the past six years. We also had the delicious scoop on Merrick's Burger 9 Point 5, a local burger joint where customers have inspired many of the menu's toppings. Patch columnist Claudia Borecky wrore that she worries that today's "in your face" drug culture will destroy future generations of young people.
On Wednesday, we had a report on the fundraising efforts for the Bellmore-Merrick Relay for Life (to be held on May 22 this year), which is being organized in large part by a 15-year-old Merrick girl. We took you inside a meeting of Calhoun High School Sports Boosters, where the condition of athletic fields and new scoreboards were the main topics of discussion. Merrick resident Sandra Johnson was among nine women honored by the Town of Hempstead at the annual Pathfinder Awards ceremony. The Jewish Women's Circle met to share their favorite Passover recipes at an event called "Pass-Over the Tradition."
On Thursday, we gave you a season preview of the Kennedy High baseball team, which will be looking to rebound from a tough outing last year. North Merrick students attended a school board meeting to present their projects for the "Hope for Haiti" Superintendent's Challenge. We also had your Merrick Crime Report, which included one home burglary in North Merrick.
On Friday, we had the rundown of a meeting of the North Merrick Civic Association, which invited officers from the First Precinct to speak about drug use in the community. The North Merrick Library Board of Trustees is set to approve a $2.1 million budget for next year. The Kennedy High academic team advanced to the second round of the quiz show "The Challenge."
On Saturday, we headed into Paddy Power, a Merrick Irish bar that has felt the sting of the weak economy, but is expecting for a big rush come March 17.
Stay tuned this week for more sports season previews from Kennedy and Calhoun, as well as everything else that needs to be "patched up" around Merrick.
