Two Calhoun Football Players Signed to College Teams

Both are looking to pursue careers in the science field.

Calhoun Colts kicker Nick Marcello and linebacker Coleman Meier have both accepted offers to play division one college football.

Meier will be heading to Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y., while Marcello will attend Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. in the fall.

Although both boys have signed on to play football at their universities, they both looked for colleges that would be able to provide them with educational services to prepare them for what would come after college. They cited study halls, mandatory study hours and extra help as reasons why they decided on the schools and teams that they did.

Meier told Merrick Patch that he was excited to get to college in the fall and start the new chapter. “I feel extremely lucky to be able to have this opportunity. I can’t wait to get to Stony Brook and prove myself,” said Meier.  He is looking to get into the sports medicine program at the university.

Marcello is looking to enter Lehigh as a biology student on a pre-medical track, but that the opportunity that he has been given to play football is one that is special to him. “I’m excited to play football at a well-known school. It’s an opportunity that not everyone is given and it’s pretty cool,” he said.

As for the support of his family, Marcello’s father, David, explained that he was proud and happy for his son. “As a parent, you always want to see your kids get what they want. He set a goal for himself and he reached it. I am happy that all of his time and effort in academics and athletics have all paid off,” he said.

Calhoun principal David Seinfeld explained that he was proud of the boys and said, “These are both all-around great kids.”

Although the focus was on the accomplishments of the players, Lucie Meier, mother of Coleman, explained that it was the family-oriented coaching style of head coach Joe Bianca that helped get the Calhoun football team and the kids on it the recognition that it deserved.

“There are football dinners every Friday night. The junior varsity and the varsity teams all eat together every Friday and the parents sponsor it. And they all have breakfast together on Saturday mornings,” she said.
