Students Transported to Hospital During Football Game

Eleven football players were taken to area hospitals for hypothermia.

Eleven football players were taken to area hospitals for hypothermia during a football game at Calhoun High School Saturday, Merrick fire officials said.

Ambulances from Merrick, Bellmore, East Meadow, Roosevelt and Freeport
Fire Departments were on the scene.

James Allen, fire chief of the North Merrick Fire Department, said when he arrived on the scene two were already transported to the hospital.

"When we got there, two came down with hypothermia during the game and were transported to the hospital by Bellmore-Merrick EMS," he said. "When we got there after the game, more kids came down with hypothermia symptoms in about 15 minutes."

The players were taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, Nassau University Medical Center, and South Nassau Communities Hospital.

The medical status of the players are unknown.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Eighteen football players were also treated for hypothermia at Plainview JFK High School Saturday. Twelve of the players were transported to area hospitals by emergency crews, firefighters said. Six more players were treated at the scene.
