Police: Stolen Car Used in Robberies Recovered at Merrick LIRR Station, Two Arrested

Two men were arrested Saturday on stolen property and robbery charges; police say one robbery occurred at a Bellmore Rite Aid last month.

A man driving a stolen car was arrested on Saturday as he attemped to leave the Merrick LIRR station, police said.

According to detectives, Bureau of Special Operations police officers were on surveillance of a Honda Civic parked at the station that was reported in Suffolk County as a stolen vehicle.  The officers observed Michael Heaney, 46, enter the vehicle and pull away, at which time they stopped the defendant and placed him under arrest.  Subsequent to investigation, it was discovered that the stolen Honda had also been used to commit other crimes.

On Friday afternoon, Shaun Collins, 34, entered a Walgreens on Oyster Bay Road in Hicksville, placed candy on the counter and handed the cashier $2.  As she opened the register to make change, the defendant lunged over the counter, pushed the cashier, stole cash from the register and then fled the scene in the stolen Honda, police said.

Collins is also accused of robbing a Rite Aid in Bellmore last month. On February 26, police said Collins entered the Rite Aid located at 2784 Sunrise Highway, laid down some candy and handed the cashier 75 cents for the items.  When the cashier opened the register, Collins grabbed cash from the register before taking off.

Police arrested Collins at the Massapequa LIRR station on Saturday. Collins is charged with robbery, criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny.  He is also wanted in Suffolk for similar robberies, police said.

Heaney is charged with criminal possession of stolen property.  Both men were arraigned yesterday in First District Court in Hempstead. Heaney is being held on a $1,000 cash bail, while Collins' bail was set at $25,000.  Both men remain in custody.
