North Merrick Facilities Referendum Passes

The district will begin seeking approval for planned projects immediately.

The North Merrick School District's Facilities Referendum, which uses $1.2 million from the capital reserve fund that expires in 2014, passed 181 to 43.

"We are gratified for the passing of the referendum vote," David Feller, superintendent, said. "We can now begin the process of obtaining New York State Education Department approval for these projects."

Improvements at Harold D. Fayette will include removal and replacement of asbestos hallways, removal and replacement of asbestos floors in the general purpose room and the kitchen, renovations of two student restrooms, replacement of a hot water heater and gym padding.

Projects at Old Mill Road School are slated to be concrete replacement in the bus loop, concrete replacement in the rear of the building, replacement of two student bathrooms to make them ADA compliant and replace five rooms of asbestos flooring.

Camp Avenue School will have the bulk of the work done and will require the most of the budget. Proposed renovations at Camp Avenue include a renovation of the entire bus loop and blacktop areas, which will ease the parking situation, resolve drainage issues and, in turn, will ease traffic at the intersection of Merrick Avenue and Camp Avenue. Removal of asbestos flooring in six classrooms will also be on the list.

The goal of the school district is to get these projects done during the summer vacation.

"On behalf of the board of education, I would like to thank the community for its support," Feller said.
