Merrick voters took to the polls early Tuesday morning to play their part in the 2011 local elections.
Primary concerns lingering through the community for this year's voting included taxes, the current economy and employment in Nassau County. August's failed Nassau Coliseum vote for a new arena was also a hot topic on voter's minds.
A lifelong Bellmore-Merrick resident, John, was disappointed in the county's decision to rule out the coliseum referendum, especially when it could have brought in several job opportunities.
"I was a strong supporter of redoing the whole coliseum," he explained. "I think they could have done a lot of things there. I really think there's a lot of parts, not necessarily in Bellmore-Merrick, but on Long Island and in Nassau County that we could look to develop."
"I'm a strong democrat for local politics," John added after voting at the Community Presbyterian Church. "I usually just vote down the party line."
Steve Gardner, a 13-year member of the Merrick community, spoke about his ongoing support for Democratic incumbent Dave Denenberg, who is facing off against Republican challenger Dr. Fred Jones.
"He's done a great job in my town's area," said Gardner of the 12-year legislative veteran. "I don't think there are too many issues locally in this election."
Merrick resident Heather felt it was important to come out and vote today, hoping to achieve change.
"I'm definitely in favor of Fred Jones," she told Patch. "He seems to align with the goals that I have and taking initiative. I think we need change against what Denenberg's had in place for 12 years."
When asked about the most important issues facing local communities, Heather responded, "Definitely reducing taxes and reducing our overspending."
Eleanor Wexler, who hit the polls at the Merrick Library, expressed her satisfaction with current officials.
"I believe Kate Murray is efficient and is keeping costs down," Wexler explained. "I'm very pleased with her whole team together. Dave Denenberg has been in office for many years and I'll vote for him again and again. He deals with our environmental issues and he is supporting our water company."
Polls are open until 9 p.m. tonight. If you're unsure of where to vote, check here.
