Merrick School Board Candidate: Dr. Nancy Kaplan

Kaplan is looking to be re-elected to the Merrick School Board.

Dr. Nancy Kaplan has been a Merrick resident since 2002 and she has served on the Board of Education since 2004. 

She is married to Lenny Kaplan who is the director of athletics at New Jersey Institute of Technology. 

Her two children attend district schools – Michael is a sophomore at Kennedy High School and Joshua is a sixth-grader at Birch Elementary School.

Kaplan’s academic credentials include a Doctorate of Education, Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree from St. John’s University. She also holds management development certificates from Harvard and Cornell Universities.

Kaplan has devoted her life to helping young people be successful. She is an associate vice president and adjunct assistant professor at St. John’s University. Throughout her 22-year career at St. John’s she has supervised areas related to academics, student services and athletics.

She is a nationally recognized educator on issues of bullying, diversity and leadership on behalf of the Anti-Defamation League, the Nassau County Holocaust and Tolerance Center and the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. She is also a licensed New York State School Business Administrator.

In addition to her service on the board of education for the past eight years, Kaplan is very active in other Merrick community organizations. She is a member of the Merrick Jewish Centre, the Merrick Kiwanis Club, she is the Treasurer of the North Merrick-Merrick Little League and a coach in the league as well, and she is a coach in the Bellmore-Merrick basketball league.
