Hero Aide Awarded at North Merrick Board Meeting

Renovations and a new library system were also discussed.

Although a majority of the North Merrick School Board meeting was dedicated to discussing the latest improvement projects in the district, the highlight was right at the beginning when the board honored Patricia Mormoris, an aide at Camp Avenue School that performed the Heimlich Manuever on a child.

"This shows how dedicated our [staff] is to this school district," said David Feller, superintendent, North Merrick.

Mormoris told the board that she learned CPR at all the Boy Scout meetings that she attended.

In addition to the award, the school district showcased improvements made with the school libraries, as well as an online book catalogue.

"Now, students can find out what is in all of the buildings. We have also been doing a lot of inter-school borrowing," Joan Mantle, library director, said.

The project took about four years to complete and is still looking to make some upgrades.

"There will be reviews, like on Amazon.com, and teachers will be able to create their own reading and resources lists," said Beth Friedman, deputy superintendent, North Merrick.

The board also got a report from James Saitta, director of school facilities, about the renovations that will be taking place this summer at all three schools. According to Saitta, there will be a traffic study done to monitor the flow of traffic at the intersection of Camp Avenue and Merrick Avenue and north of the property.

Saitta requested that the county look into moving the two bus stops that are on the property of Camp Avenue School – moving the one on Camp Avenue to the Starbucks side of the street and moving the bus stop on Merrick Avenue closer to the northern stoplight.
