Hempstead Town Notebook: Pet Adoption, Senior Crime Prevention

A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

Animal Shelter Open House

The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is hosting a Valentine’s Day Open House on Saturday, Feb. 11. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., where employees will be on hand to help residents find an adoptable cat or dog to welcome into your home.

Visitors are welcome to stop in and learn more about the benefits of pet adoption and tips about pet ownership. The town's veterinarian will be available to answer residents' pet medical questions. Also, visitors will have a chance to learn more about the Animal Shelter’s fostering programs.

All of the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter's dogs and cats have been spay-neutered, received age appropriate vaccinations and tested for feline AIDS/leukemia. The shelter also offers a microchipping program. The microchipping program places a safe implant in each pet to help lost pets reunite with their owners.

For more information, call the shelter, located at 3320 Beltagh Ave. in Wantagh, at (516) 785-5220. The shelter's adoption hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Distraction Burglary Seminars

To prepare and educate senior residents about protecting themselves from dangerous criminal activity -- including a string of recent distraction burglaries -- the town has kicked off a series of Senior Citizens' Crime Prevention Seminars that began on Jan. 6 at the East Meadow Senior Center.

All seminars are free of charge, and open to all senior residents living in the Town of Hempstead.

Distraction burglaries typically involve multiple criminals targeting seniors at their homes. Usually, one person diverts the senior citizen's attention at the front door with a bogus service or sales pitch, while another breaks into the home and steals money and/or valuable items.

In the case of inclement weather, check with individual senior centers on event dates by calling the phone numbers listed. The seminar schedule is as follows:

Regarding the below:
"Distraction Burglary Seminars / Senior Citizen Crime Prevention Schedule"
"All seminars are free of charge, and open to all senior residents living in the Town of Hempstead"
- Since it is open for ALL seniors in the TOH, do we know if this information was sent to all by US Mail to all who need this information the most.
There are seniors who do not have computers and are the most vulnerable about this topic.

I agree with Paul 100%. But in addition to that, as my Mother's Caregiver, would I be able to attend any of the "Distraction Burglary Seminars" for her? With so many Seniors in our area being taken care of by "Caregivers" (relatives or not) at home, I strongly feel we should have that information as well.

I didnt know there was a serious crime wave comitted by Senior citizens....according to the Patch headline. It appears that we have to do something drastic to prevent seniors from comitting these heinous acts.
I know for one, there was a drive-by spitting by one grandmother while sitting in her HoverRound. And an elderly man was caught pocketing some stool softener at his neighborhood CVS. And two elderly women were arrested at the senior center after maliciously knocking into each other and causing serious damage to their walkers.
Its a dangerous situation out there among our seniors and we may have to resort to holding back their Social Security checks or forcing them all to allegedly getting strip searched by over zealous TSA agents.
