UPDATE: Garbage Can Fire Sparks School Evacuation at Calhoun

The school was evacuated as a precaution.

Patch has confirmed that a small fire in a Calhoun High School bathroom briefly evacuated the school.

Michelle Gagnon, head of community relations for the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, told Patch that the small fire started at about 10:30 a.m. in a waste basket. Smoke then extended into the hallway and the students were evacuated for about ten minutes.

Nassau County Police and the North Merrick Fire Department were both called to the scene. An investigation by the Fire Marshal and NCPD as to what started the fire is currently underway.

This is a breaking news story. Patch will have more updates as they become available.
