Firefighters Battle Blaze in Merrick Home

Fire started on the second floor of a Marion Avenue residence.

A fire tore through the second floor of a residence on Marion Avenue in Merrick on Wednesday.

The occupants of the home were able to escape unhurt and more than 75 firefighters from North Merrick, East Meadow, Roosevelt and North Bellmore responded to fight the flames. The Merrick Fire Department was on call for any further emergencies.

"The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but we believe that it was caused by the water heater on the second floor," said Sean Kelleher, first assistant chief, North Merrick.

Kelleher said that there was fire damage on the second floor and water damage on the first floor as a result of getting the fire extinguished.
