Election 2011: Murray Defeats Port for Town Supervisor
Republican incumbent will serve another two-year term.
Incumbent Republican Kate Murray easily defeated Democratic challenger Gary Port Tuesday for the Hempstead Town Supervisor seat.
Murray captured 66.84 percent of the total vote against the non-incumbent, Port.
"I want to thank all of the residents of Hempstead Town who exercised their right to vote in this election," Murray told Patch. "I am grateful for the support I have received, and I am eager to work with all of the members of Hempstead Town's family to deliver upon Team Murray's campaign motto of 'freezing taxes, helping people.'"
Murray was tapped to be the town's supervisor by Nassau County Republican Chairman Joseph N. Mondello in 2003 after Richard V. Guardino Jr. announced his resignation as supervisor.
Prior to her time as supervisor, Murray had served as Hempstead Town Clerk for one year.
On Feb. 3, 1998 Murray became the first woman elected to the New York State Assembly from the 19th District.
Before serving as an elected official, Murray worked as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Justice Section handling prisoner litigation. She had also served as advocate for Suffolk University Battered Women's Advocacy Project.
| Candidates | Votes | % Precincts Reported |
| Murray | 71,465 | 66.84 |
| Port | 35,400 | 33.11 |

A message to Gary Port! Take your signs down from the middle of Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown. You and your followers should seek support from homeowners and business’s in Levittown. You turned me off by posting your signs on State Property. Or did you get permission from NIFA?

Apathy is why Kate gets the vote. Combine this with all the photos, signs and machine this is why you win. Too many voters honestly do not know enough or do the research needed to see what is going on. Lets face it Kate Murray is a name brand and one unless you are blind you see every 20 feet driving anywhere in the TOH. In order for anyone to unseat her they would need to invest a boatload of money and ALL their time in trying to get elected. the fact that is was so one sided tells Kate whatever she is doing is fine. We can only hope for the best at this point.

Move to TONH to be overspent and create multiple districts to get something done. Move to TOBAY to live a country club life style through public money, Islip and Riverhead for revitalization, Babylon and Huntington and Brookhaven to live in beautiful affordable communities with businesses and good neighbors and the east end to isolate one self. You move to TOH to be milked for your money with a collapsing infrastructure and a lesser version of Queens minus a subway. Great Job Kate and former TOH Rich Guardino

Once again, Merrick displays that level of anger and insult that surely caused the loss of MR. Port. the voters spoke, by over 2-1. Respect them. Kate even did great in heavily democratic areas and won in Mr. Port home town of West Hempstead. the voters feel she is doing a good job. Other incumbents were tossed out,, so they voters are picky. 2-1 is not apathy, it's approval

With all due respect to Kate (and genuine congratulations to her), I was curious to see what someone else in the office could do. Like Curt, I feel there is little being done to entice business into the area.
However, it often seemed that Mr. Port ran on a platform focusing solely on the mismanagement of the animal shelter. And while that has been a disturbing situation (and I'm sure a thorn in Murray's side), that was simply not going to be enough to sway votes.
We'll see what happens next election time, but for now -- Good luck Kate.

what people fail to see is that no matter if over half the residents would have voted against her it still wouldnt have made a difference, why you ask..simple, they have been building their huge work force for years and years. making more departments and creating a larger work force. add all the employees and their familys and you have an instant advantage. do the rough math and you will see with that type of advantage No one could have beat her. It would have taken the entire population of the town voting against her to be able to beat her, or anyone else in the past or the future. That is the sad facts. anyone with an automatic advantage margin such as this will always win year after year. thats why the only jobs she creates are patronage jobs. Im curious of how many promotions there will be in all the departments now that she won. each time providing even more future votes. There is something to be said about other townships who elect their dept heads (highway superintendent) (parks superintendent ) ..ect. instead of those jobs being given to them by the supervisors office . favors down the line . think about it. In the outside job workforce you get promotions due to your job performance and qualifications not from who you know and how much you pay for your job. And before anyone tells me im wrong, I have been there , first hand. so dont tell me otherwise.

How come in this age of digital elections and scantron ballots it takes the folks at the BOE over an hour and a half to report any results?

I wonder if we are touching upon a bigger subject here -- that of term limits? Might be something to consider: Extend the term to 4 - 6 years with no re-election. Or keep the term at two years but then you can only be re-elected twice after the initial run.
That way, a person has a solid amount of time in the office to get some things accomplished during their tenure, and there is less risk of political ''dynasties."

Let's face it. Kate Murray has the Nassau County Republican machine backing her up. The Town needs more business and better infratructure. Like all Repugnians she squeals about lowering taxes. Let's look at the history. Which party has made TOH and Nassau County the highest taxed in the country? Repugnicans have owned the TOH for 100 years. Kate Murray is part of the problem, not a solution.

Exactly Mary - Everytime I look at my tax bill I want to scream!!!! 8,000 + a year for school taxes is outlandish!!! This is why I and thousands more voted a big, fat, loud, "NO" at the budget vote last May. What burns me more is the fact that they are allowed to have a second vote if the first fails. So I ask, "WHAT PART OF NO, DO THEY NOT GET" When the second vote came up another bigger, fatter, louder "NO" was stated. They need money? Well, how about freezing the teachers salaries, or the overpaid administrators salaries? Why do we end up giving these people raises? My paycheck out here hasn't reflected any kind of a raise in the past 6+ years. You get a raise, BUT - the insurance goes up...End result - Less money home. Suggestion - How about raising the school taxes on the people that have children in the schools {Many have 2 or more in there} Why does the school tax become the burden of the "NO CHILDREN" in the school group?

Ozone,
If I may ask, why should I pay towards a social security plan that in all likelihood -- when I reach that age -- will have little or nothing available for me?
What about the taxes we pay toward infrastructure improvement: why should we not pay taxes toward road improvements if we don't take road trips? If I've never needed the assistance of the police, is that a justification to skip paying the taxes that pay for their salaries?
Because our country is *supposed* to be built upon helping one another -- and helping the country to further prosper.
Let me ask you a question: did you go to public school when you were younger? If so, then someone paid for your education. I don't know what you do for a living, by whatever it is I'm sure you benefit our community in some way. Meanwhile, the people you deal with every day -- your doctor, your plumber, your tax accountant, your lawyer -- chances are that (admittedly) some of them attended public school at one point or another.
Right now in our schools, there are children who may in fact be your future doctor, plumber, tax accountant, and lawyer -- the ones you have right now aren't going to be around forever. I'm sure we can all agree that our society benefits from a well-educated community.

(read the first part below)
Now this all aside, I do agree -- the taxes in our area are extremely high. And while this may upset some of my friends who are teachers, I think that there has not been enough willingness on their side to make sacrifices. A number of folks in our community have not seen so much as a quality of life raise in a few years -- but with increasing expenses, such as medical premiums, it does seem a bit unfair that the school budget increases each year.
I think there needs to be be more acceptance of 'shared sacrifice' during these hard economic times. Of course that's why I support the idea of governmental spending cuts coupled with taxes on the wealthiest -- but that's a completely different conversation altogether.
Best,

Morning Tom -
I agree with you, I really do. I have no problem paying taxes for our road repair, police, etc...To answer your question - No, I did not attend public school - Went to a Catholic Elementary School 1 - 8, then attended Dominican Commercial High School, another Catholic school. My son, attended a catholic grammer school, then attended a public high school out here. Yes, he received an excellent education and has a civil servant job here in nassau county. I'm simply saying, 8,000.00/yr for school taxes for people who do not utilize the schools or their grounds is ridiculous. I have been trying to have a discount applied to homeowners, such as myself, who don't have kids in the schools anymore. I don't think it's fair that we should continue to pay that amount. How about a 50% reduction to us. I have no problem contributing, but it's out of control.
Mac
10:38 am on Thursday, November 10, 2011
TOH taxes arent the problem but now that they arent going to be raised we will see the other funds depleted. School taxes cannot be split if you have children or not. The school taxes are the same as paying into your community. I can only imagine what our streets and jails would look like without education. The school tax shouldnt be a "burden" to anyone but an investment in the future. As Tom pointed out what if that student we are all paying for ends up being a doctor that treats us for cancer or the lawyer who helps us when we are buying our first house or the engineer that designs your house or your private business owner then even that politician who gets elected by us. Our responsibilty is to look towards the future. Does the system need to be looked at carefully for improvements YES. It is just too short sighted and simplistic an idea for people not to pay school tax. If everyone didnt pay school taxes there would be no public school.

Hi Ozone,
Full disclosure: With the exception of kindergarten, I also went to Catholic schools all the way through college. And wow, I still get shaky sometimes when I have to pick up a red pen (there was one nun that was crazy for them LOL).
That being said, my boys are in Public school here in Levittown, because its a solid system with great educators.
I do see your point, however -- though I think 50% might be asking a bit much. But perhaps some sort of reduction for residents with no children attending school might be worth exploring. That way you're still contributing to the future of our community/country by supporting the education system (and the future community leaders it will produce) -- but you get a discount for not actually utilizing it.
Best

Note to Jbauer when you or two of your family members is a Town of Hempstead employee and your name appears on the TOH payroll which is public knowledge it is probably wise not to post your Kate Murray brown nosing comments with your last name listed as they seem less genuine.
This whole thread is a joke Kate Murray spent 700k to buy this election Gary Port spent 20k. Frooze town taxes this year(that matters to some of us)
Has the highest bond rating for any town in NYS(again it matters to some of us)
Last Union contract got Unions members to contribute to Health plan
Created first Hydrogen fueling station on Long Island for vehicle
Got rid of Courtesy hotel(Some will cry not fats enough but she did it)
Got office/house in the vacant Avis property on Old Country Road
Created housing at old navy property on Stewart Ave
Created Senior housing in North valley Stream and Uniondale.
Created new home for Camp ANCHOR
Heres a few, but regardless, that wont satisfy you and a few others who just plain hate her. The voters have spoken!

Terry its like amatuer hour with you
a) she raised taxes in the TOH almost 50% since taking office, she only freezes taxes in election yrs by tapping into reserves and raises taxes in off years
b) bond ratings mean nothing when we have 15% unemployment in the town bond ratings only allow Kate to borrown further and put the town into further debt. Countrywide had a triple a bond rating up to 2006 as well.
c)Wow I am jumping up and down bc after 100 yrs Kate finally got a concession on the part of the union
d)She did this with state and federal funds and since so many people are using hydrogen cars these days it is such a great program
e)she opposed the closing for 5 yrs and fought against it until finally her own councilman had to convince her the motel had to be closed, then she took credit for it
f)no offices no houses it will be all retail space to compete with the source which is already failing. So yippie Kate created more 8-9 dollars an hour jobs.
g) wonderful job creating more 600k+ housing at avalon bay, I am sure the youth of LI will all be able to afford
h)This is how Kate wins by landslide every election she gets the senior vote
I) and now I finally figured out why you have been a diehard Kate fan leading up to this election you are connected to Camp Anchor in some fashion
The mystery was finally solved. Great job Terry perhaps when Mike Deery leaves his 167k a yr town job you can step in as Town spokesperson or propaganda spitter.

It is hard for me to take you seriously when you misspell a word like "froze". And please do not give Kate credit for removing the Courtesy Hotel...she fought redevelopment of that area for years. I'm still waiting for specific examples of accomplishments that have helped the redevelopment of the communities of the town as a whole. An example would be of commercial development that makes sense that would ultimately help with the current tax burden of homeowners here in the town.

I feel that Mr Port could not fight the machine and hopefully Kate looks at how she can improve herself because regardless of her win or the voters speaking there is always room to improve. LOL, like I said, froze is an ugly word for a democrat since they only like the word "raise"
And I will give Kate credit, since she actually did it, and has only been Sup for 8 years. And her development will help tax burden. Hell, she carried West Hempstead and thats where her opponent lived.
And I guess the Avis property redevelopment and Stewart Ave redevelopment went over your head since that bring in tax revenue.(helps tax burden)
And I guess the Union concession went over your head because that save residents money too(help tax burden).
But it's hard to take you seriously when you won't accept any of these accomplishments.
the voters have spoken, deal with it. And these all all facts, deal with them. You wanted them, you got them.
But I'm sure none of these will please you. Because you really dont care, you just dislike Kate no matter what she does.

Mac, my dad was a huge history buff and teacher.
Flamboyant in life, George Armstrong Custer has remained on of the most controversial military figures in US history. Immediately after high school he enrolled in West Point, where he utterly failed to distinguish himself in any positive way. Several days after graduating last in his class, he failed in his duty as officer of the guard to stop a fight between two cadets which resulted in the death of both . He was court-martialed and saved from punishment only by the huge need for officers with the outbreak of the Civil War. His units in the Virginia and Gettysburg campaigns suffered enormously high casualty rates, the highest in the war to date because of his terrible planning. In 1876, Custer was sent against the Lakota Indians and infuriated President Ulysses S. Grant that he relieved Custer of his command and replaced him, but was later convinced to reverse the decision and send him against the Cheyenne Indians . Once on the scene, Custer ordered an immediate attack on the Indian village, he split his forces into three parts to ensure that fewer Indians would escape. The attack was one the greatest fiascos of the United States Army, as thousands warriors forced Custer's unit at the Little Bighorn, surrounded them, and killed all 210 of them. It took the US military 4 years to recover. It will take longer and strain our patience with Ms Murray as our commander.
