UPDATE: Deception Burglaries Hit Merrick

The burglaries have occurred across Nassau County.

A Merrick resident was nearly robbed Tuesday afternoon after a female suspect attempted to lure the resident out of their home so another suspect could go in and burglarize the residence.

According to Nassau County Police, shortly before a similar incident in Massapequa Park, there was a related incident on Yale Place in Merrick involving a female subject fitting description of the suspect involved in the Massapequa Park burglary and attempting to use the identical plot to lure a resident outside of their home.

In Massapequa Park, the suspect appeared at the front door of an 81-year-old male's residence, police said. She stated that she had recently moved into the neighborhood and wanted to put up a fence that would border on the victim’s property. While communicating with someone via a two-way radio, she convinced the home's owner to go to the back yard with her while a second suspect -- a tall male -- went into the home and stole assorted jewelry.

According to police, the two fled in a grey or blue vehicle with out of state license plates.

The female suspect is described as being Hispanic or possibly a light-skinned black, in her 20s, medium build, approximately 5-foot-8, wearing a knit hat, black jacket, blue jeans and black boots.

Police issued a crime alert about these so-called deception burglaries after that burglary and another incident involving two men in Jericho.

Detectives are requesting anyone with information regarding these crimes to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls are confidential and all callers will remain anonymous.
